Autumn Reflections

In a word: Winter, warmth. Spring, hope. Summer: laughter.

Autumn. Reflection?

I share two poems I discovered recently that I thought captured shades of Autumn exceptionally well...

A Letter

When I walked home forgotten,

When I walked home in grief,

I found a letter under my door.

It was an autumn leaf.

Harold Witter Bynner, Take Away the Darkness, 1947

Witter Bynner, 1925. Preeminent poet of the first half of the 20th century...
Recently had the privilege of staying in his historic home, now the Inn of the Turquoise Bear in Santa Fe.

A Fall Poem

Come with me
Let me take your hand in my
Fall, orange-scented hand
And we will walk.

We will walk and scuff
Through the big, crunchy leaves
And watch the small, yellow ones
Fall Float Drift toward us.

They are high
Tinkling piano notes
Falling, falling.
Before the wind whisks them up
To the place where the song lives
In our hands, clasped.
